学本科试验班的创办是我国大学培养国学人才的有益尝试，也是培养跨学科人才的有力举措。但国学学科有其特性，学生的学习和研究也有特定的系统性和连续性，不可能在本科期间一蹴而就。为进一步推动国学研究和教学，同时为有志于国学研究的学子提供继续深造的专业平台，武汉大学于2007年底自行增列了国学专业的硕士点与博士点，于2008年上报国务院学位委员会备案，2009年正式招生。
The foundation of undergraduate Chinese Classics Class is a kind of constructive attempt both in Chinese Classics and interdisciplinary talents cultivation. And it cannot be done at one stroke during undergraduate period because of the characteristic of academic discipline and as well the consistency and systematicness in students’ study. So in order to further impel development of researching and teaching of Chinese Classics and provide professional platform for those aspire to get advanced education in Chinese culture, Wuhan University added doctoral and master programs of Chinese Classics at the end of 2007, and then submitted to the Academic Degree Commission of the State Council and saved as a record in 2008, followed with official enrollment in 2009.
目前，武汉大学国学硕士、博士点下设有：1、经学研究方向；2、子学研究方向；3、史部典籍研究方向；4、集部研究方向；5、佛教与道教研究方向。武汉大学国学硕博士点的特色主要体现在两大方面：第一，多学科交叉。在设置研究方向和配备师资上努力打破原有的文、史、哲学科界限，根据国学学科自身的特点，初步确定了五个研究方向，横跨文学、历史学、哲学、宗教学、艺术学五大学科，实现诸学科真正交叉融合。在师资方面，组织有实力的专家担任国学硕、博士生导师，并拟进一步聘请海内外知名专家加盟该博士点，联合指导。对硕、博士生也拟采取适当“走出去”的方式，加强校际、国际学生交流。第二，强调原著经典的创造诠释。原著经典是国学研究之生命力和创造力的根源，国学硕、博士点拟在突出小学训练和古文献训练的基础上，加强外语、中外学术之方法训练与国学典籍的创造性诠释，重视海外中国学成果的研讨，重视启发学生的问题意识，训练学生创造性诠释与研究的能力。
For the moment, doctoral and master programs in Wuhan University consist of exegetical Study of Confucian Classics (Jingxue 经学), Study of Masters’ Theories (Zixue 子学), Study of Historical Classics (Shibu 史部), Study of Classical Literature (Jibu 集部) and Study of Buddhism and Daoism. And there are two main features: First, it is multidisciplinary. Break disciplinary boundaries of literature, history and philosophy in research directions and faculty members, and preliminarily divide them into five directions, including literature, history, philosophy, religion and art on the basis of subject characteristics. Influential experts are going to be master and doctoral students’ prospective supervisors, and we also plan to invite famous domestic and overseas experts to join this doctoral program and co-guide our students, who are also encouraged to go out and try something new. Second, it emphasizes the productive interpretation of Chinese Classics. Original classics are always the foundation of vitality and ingenuity. Our doctoral and master programs focus on the thorough grounding in ancient texts, as well as the training of foreign languages and different academic methodologies, aiming at enlightening student’s question consciousness and developing their capacity of productive interpretation and research skills.
